Predicting Auroras – Wednesday 14th January 2015, 6pm
Auroras (northern lights) are one of our planet’s natural wonders. Usually a polar phenomenon, they are visible from the Dundee area only a couple of times each decade, but this winter our chances of seeing them are significantly better than normal.
At Café Science Dr Alex Russell explored the science of auroras and the Sun’s magnetic outbursts responsible for the best displays. He explained how scientists try to predict them, why this always involves a gamble and why the year 2015 is special.
Café Science Extra took place in the relaxed atmosphere of Dundee Science Centre’s infusion cafe.
