Why Can't People Stop Smoking? – 7pm June 16th – Harbour Cafe, Tayport
Everyone knows that smoking is bad for you and most smokers say they want to quit – but most fail. Indeed, many in the field suggest that tobacco smoking is more addictive than the addictions to most, if not all, illicit drugs of abuse. This presentation will focus on the reasons why smoking cigarettes is so addictive.
It is widely accepted that nicotine is the primary addictive component of tobacco. However, experimentally, nicotine itself is seems to be only weakly addictive. Thus, there is a conundrum – how can tobacco smoke be so addictive when the drug we blame for causing the addiction is relatively non-addictive?
Join us for this talk by David Balfour which will consider how recent studies have contributed to our understanding of what happens in our bodies to cause addiction to smoking.
This FREE talk will be taking place at the Tayport’s newest and best cafe, The Harbour Cafe on Broad Street, which will be open before the talk for snacks and drinks.
Seating is limited so please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
